Robert Downey Jr showed up, TJ Miller sported a custom ugly Christmas blazer and Green Day called out Trump – this is the American Music Awards recap.

As expected, the great hosts of the night (Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharoah) had opening material filled to the brim with election jokes. After assuring the voting crowd that they wouldn’t have to worry about “deal[ing] with the electoral college,” Hadid busted out a Melania Trump impression: “I love my husband, President Barack Obama. And our children, Sasha and Malia.” Pharoah yelled in reply, “That’s spot on!”

Drake broke an AMA record with 13 nominations (knocking out Michael Jackson’s 11, from back in 1984), and walked away with four wins. Sting was presented with the Merit Award which resulted in a grand medley of some of his greatest hits – I Can’t Stop Thinking About You, Every Breath You Take and The Police’s Message In A Bottle.

TJ Miller got everyone excited for Christmas with this afore-mentioned festive monstrosity.

After winning the award for favourite alternative rock artist, Twenty One Pilots’ drummer, Josh Dun, was all of us when we get in front of a crowd.

And cof course the AMAs just wouldn’t be the AMAs without a musical performance extravaganza. Bruno Mars opened the night with 24k Magic and some funky dance moves.

Niall Horan took to the AMA stage for the first time as a solo artist to perform This Town. Travis Barker joined The Chainsmokers and Halsey for Closer. Shawn Mendes, Fifth Harmony, Twenty One Pilots and Justin Bieber (who’s currently in the middle of his ‘Purpose’ world tour) were huge crowd pleasers, while Ariana Grande and Nikki Minaj swapped out their exercise bikes for a sexy jungle theme to sing Side To Side.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong got political during Bang Bang – ad-libbing “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!” into the bridge – and Drake got down to The Weeknd’s extravagant performance of Starboy.

Everyone needed to pick their jaws up off the floor following Lady Gaga’s extremely powerful and beautiful rendition of Million Reasons. But it was Gaga who was left emotional after Selena Gomez’s moving acceptance speech for favourite pop/rock female artist.
