Emmi is the winner of this year’s MTV Brand New contest.
The Perth-based singer-songwriter picked up just under 60,000 votes to edge out a strong field of Australian and Kiwi emerging artists, including Montaigne, Maala, Nicole Millar and Paces.
Born in the UK, Emmi’s family moved to Perth when she was a child and she originally concentrated on writing songs for other artists. However, after a late night chat with her mum, she decided to take the plunge and sing her own material, and has since reached several singles, including Our Youth, which has racked up more than 25 million streams on Spotify.
“I’ve worked so hard for so long all over the world, so to have my music recognised back home where it all started feels particularly meaningful to me,” Emmi says. “I only have my fans to thank for making this possible. They have been obsessively voting from start to finish and I’ve been overwhelmed by their support.”
As well as providing a major promotional boost for the nominated performers, this year for the first time, MTV offered a $10,000 donation to the winning artists charity of choice; Emmi has chosen to donate the money to Telethon Perth, which raises funds for medical research into children’s diseases and provides vital medical equipment to areas of need in Western Australia.
