Amy Shark @ The Corner Hotel, Melbourne, Thursday 17 August 2017
Kicking off her national Night Thinker tour with the first of four sold-out nights in Melbourne, Gold Coast singer-songwriter Amy Shark sauntered onto the stage with pint in hand. Backed by a two-piece band (comprising a drummer and a multi-instrumentalist who switched between keyboards and bass as required), the musician hopped straight into the mesmerising Drive You Mad.
Shark took her time between songs to connect with the crowd with witty anecdotes and the origins of each track – most of which are about heartbreak – while her palpable sincerity just confirmed her approachability and down-to-earth persona. It also intensified the crowd’s reaction when the songs began, especially for the heart-wrenching Middle of the Night and audience favourite Deleted.
Closing in on the end of her set, Shark played the unreleased deep cut You Think I Think You Sound Like God (her first ever song, and one you’ll likely only ever hear live) – one of the highlights of the night. Its delicate opening is a front for the huge crescendo of sound that is its conclusion; imagine Shark fronting UK rockers Foals, and you get the vibe. She then moved into a cover of Eminem’s Superman with universal approval from the worshipping crowd.
The Gold Coaster ending the hour-long show with Adore, and not once was there a feeling that anyone was there for the hit alone; the track existed more like the sprinkles on top of a well-rounded set than any kind of one-hit wonder. As the show ended, loved-up couples set off into the cold arm-in-arm, while loved-up fans waited patiently at the merch desk to meet the right-hand slugger.
Night Thinker EP is out now via Sony.
