The ‘Aussie SXSW’ – also known as BIGSOUND – is upon us in QLD’s Fortitude Valley from September 4-7. In the lead-up, we’re taking a look at some of the most promising names who’ll be appearing at the conference and festival.
Good things come to those who wait; riding the wave of her Queensland Music Award and Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition nominations, Brisbane indie darling Asha Jefferies has been cooking up a new EP – due October.
What sets your music apart?
TOUGH question. Super difficult for musicians to demonstrate their nonproblematic traits. I’d say I’m a very subconscious writer. I never intend to say anything, but whatever comes out always has truth. I’d like to say the music is an intimate yet explosive occasion.
Which movie scene would your latest single suit?
Probably that really wholesome scene at the end of The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy wakes up in her bed and she chills out cause she’s home and doesn’t have to face any wicked witch or follow a never-ending yellow brick road.
Give us your best useless fact.
I get addicted to different food sauces. I ate all of my housemate’s sriracha sauce because it needed to be on literally everything and now I’m addicted to peanut butter. I’ve been putting it in everything, especially sushi.
What can we expect from you at BIGSOUND next month?
All I can really say is that I’ve never put so much thought, care and attention into any rehearsal for a live performance ever. Lots of feelings are going to go outwards.
Which BIGSOUND acts are you looking forward to seeing?
I am actually in love with MERPIRE, her music is so indulgent and floral, and her voice floors me.
What are you working on at the moment? Plans for the near future?
My new single Everybody Talks just came out (!!) and I’m just icing the cake which is the EP at the moment, due out in October. Lots of shows here and there too.
For fans of: Thelma Plum, Angel Olsen, Ben Howard.
Totty plays Black Bear Lodge on Tuesday Sept 4 and The Foundry on Thursday Sept 6.
