On the canned-heat heels of his #1 debut A Place We Knew, Sydney singer songwriter Dean Lewis is finally bringing his massive international A Place We Knew tour to his home country, after a bucketload of successful dates across the US, Canada, UK and Europe. We asked him to detail the top five lessons he’s learned about the long, hard, but very rewarding tour life.
1: YOU’RE ALWAYS GOING TO BE NERVOUS – DO IT ANYWAY
The first lesson I’ve learnt is that I am always going to be nervous and most things are always going to be a challenge. But I make sure I always play the show, and give it my all!
2: YOU CREATE THE ENERGY
I would be lying if I said the reaction of a crowd doesn’t impact the way that I play; if the crowd is really into it, I feel it and feed off it. If they are not so into it and the energy isn’t there, I used to feel a bit disappointed – and it would show! Then one show I decided that I was just going to give it my all, and bring all the energy myself instead of drawing it from the crowd. That’s when I learnt that it has to come from ME!
3: ALWAYS DO YOUR WASHING ON YOUR DAY OFF
This one is pretty self-explanatory but it’s easy to forget, and your dirty washing soon piles up. When you get a day off you want to just relax and do nothing, but if you get up early and do your washing, you won’t have to worry about having enough clean t-shirts and undies.
4: HAVE A GUITAR ON THE BUS, ALWAYS
I always like having a guitar lying around on the bus, as ideas always come at the weirdest times. I just bought a little nylon string one in Germany for 100 Euros that is perfect for throwing on the bus.
It’s easy to lose yourself a little bit without a routine when being away and living out of a suitcase for so long. I counter that by doing things I do at home on the road: watching the same shows, having time to myself, writing in my notebook in the morning… These are the things that help to make things feel normal!
