It’s a little over a month until alt-J drop their majorly anticipated new album The Dream, and the fellas have just plonked the third taste of its tracklist into our laps.
Entitled Hard Drive Gold, bandmember Gus Unger-Hamilton describes it as a “spiritual successor to Left Hand Free (from 2014 smash LP This Is All Yours) the lyrics of which prod at – as you may have guessed from the track’s title – the cryptocurrency salvo.
Its video also presents the directorial debut from vocalist Joe Newman; Newman directed the clip in tandem with his partner Darcy Wallace (herself a Melbourne-bred professional choreographer), and he says that his childhood appreciation for cinema engendered a great interest in getting involved with all of the band’s videos:
“I saw our music videos as opportune moments for directors to create stories purely, and so we, the band, did not appear in our videos,” he explains. “By avoiding cuts to a band playing in an ‘aeroplane hangar’, the audience could focus on the cinema over the indie band music video tropes.
“I had ideas for videos that I passed on to directors to develop; watching these directors execute some of these ideas inspired me, and now I want to understand and experience the process at a deeper level.”
We will confirm that the video is indeed teh distillation of a few very original ideas – but it’d be mega-rude to spoil any more, so you’ll just have to experience it yourself.
