We put a wee spotlight on AMP and APRA Award-winning Yorta Yorta man Briggs’ excellent single Life Is Incredible back in 5 Tunes a few weeks ago, but now the dude has released a lushly-filmed clip which deserves all the moon men, surfboards, pyramids and gramophones there are on offer.
The track’s lyrics point to the terribly low life expectancy rate for Indigenous Australians, which Briggs has expanded into the setting of an Aged Care facility (named “Whitehaven Retirement Home” if you please), in which he has chosen to live out his twilight years playing golf and chatting with similarly young Indigenous retirees – who all, slowly but as surely as that linedance is gonna grapevine to the left, begin kicking the bucket. Also, there’s a few crusty old white dudes who are clearly going to outlive everyone else.
From the presser: “Briggs called upon his dearest friends to be systematically killed off throughout the video including footy greats Adam Goodes, Michael O’Loughlin and George Rose, prolific playwright Nakkiah Lui and actor Shari Sebbens (Sapphires). Briggs found it wasn’t hard to get them on board. ‘The video’s message around Indigenous life expectancy really resonated with everyone I approached so they were on board no matter how I planned to kill them off.’“
Aside from the important message of awareness and the inspired video, this track contains some of the most hilarious lines you’re likely to hear this year (faves being “We f-ck up the party like acoustic guitars” and just that little background “PLOT TWIST!”), which isn’t surprising considering Briggs’ blooming comedic writing career.
