Album cover artwork for COld Chisel album with vinyl record sticking outJimmy Barnes and his band of merry pups (AKA Cold Chisel) are ready and rearing to release Volume 5 in their epic Live Tapes series, and this edition captures the guys on a sweaty Friday eve in 1980, just three days before they’d record their breakthrough album East.

This volume follows the other four entries in the wildly popular series, which spreads its red-blooded embrace right across the Chisel career. The full sequence comprises Volume 1 (recorded in Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion in April 2012, released 2013), Volume 2 (recorded in Melbourne’s Bombay Rock in April 1979 and released in 2014), Volume 3 (recorded at The Manly Vale Hotel in Sydney in June 1980, released 2016) and Volume 4 (recorded at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in December 2015, and released in 2017).

This time we get the fellas tearing up the Bondi Lifesaver on February 29, 1980; check out the rip-snorting version of My Turn To Cry below, which features typically blistering vocals from the always sprightly Barnsey, and Don Walker practically pounding his way through the floorboards as he mashes those keys.

Live Tapes Vol. 5 by Cold Chisel is out Dec 11 via Cold Chisel Music.
