Sydney singer-songwriter and pianist Jack Colwell has today lifted the veil on In My Dreams; produced by Sarah Blasko, it’s the first single from Colwell’s fiendishly anticipated debut album.

In My Dreams is a vivid aural tale which seems to split the walls of the confessional booth clean open; Colwell beckons rich strings and gilded piano into alliance with his typically striking, deep vocals, as he laments a love which drifts from his grasp.

It’s accompanied by a sumptuous clip filmed in the rural countryside of England, about which Colwell says: “When I was writing the song, I was heavily influenced by Renaissance and Golden Age paintings that depicted violent scenes. I found it really fascinating how something so beautiful could also be so tortured. I collected images that I passed onto the director [Californian filmmaker Joe Nankin, who has created clips for The xx and Purity Ring] who immediately caught onto what I was trying to express with my music. We ran away to the woods and conjured up our own queer version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Watch below, and see the alchemy IRL when Colwell takes a mini-tour (supported by the wonderful Ella Hooper) to Sydney and Melbourne next month:
