Opening with Warren Ellis’ magical, breathy harmonium, Earthlings is described by Cave as “the finest track of the Ghosteen sessions,” referring to the band’s most recent album of original material, 2019’s Ghosteen. “Earthlings is the missing link that binds Ghosteen together,” he continues. “A lovely song that just got away.”
B-Sides & Rarities Part II was compiled by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis – who as a duo released their own album of new material just a few months ago, CARNAGE – and contains 27 rare and unreleased tracks from between 2006 and 2020, including the first recordings of Girl In Amber, Skeleton Tree, and Bright Horses.
The collection will be available on its own, or packaged with its project-predecessor, 2005’s B-Sides & Rarities, which is one truly mammoth boxset: it contains 83 tracks spread across 7 LPs, housed in a deluxe case bound slipcase with foiling, featuring exclusive photographs and sleeve notes.
Meanwhile, here’s a beaut quote from Cave about why he digs B-sides so much:
“I always liked the original B-Sides & Rarities more than any of our other albums. It’s the only one I’d listen to willingly. It seems more relaxed, even a bit nonsensical in places, but with some beautiful songs throughout. There is something, too, about the smallness of certain songs that is closer to their original spirit.”
