Following a live TV final on Saturday night, Montaigne has been crowned the winner of Eurovision – Australia Decides.
Montaigne’s winning performance of Don’t Break Me saw the Sydney artist knocking out nine impressive performances by Australian favourites including Casey Donovan (runner-up) and Vanessa Amorosi (third place) in a live ceremony hosted by Joel Creasey and Myf Warhurst, which took place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
During her performance, Montaigne – dressed like a Pierrot clown complete with bright blue barnet, tulle neck ruff and red blobs of rouge on her cheeks – totally nailed those lung-busting, soaring, “Don’t break me!” choruses. This was all while expertly weaving through formations created by five backing dancers and participating in this fully choreographed routine.
Australia’s best performing Eurovision finalist to date Dami Im, who came second in 2016 with her song Sound of Silence (not by Simon & Garfunkel), also appeared at the Gold Coast event over the weekend, revealing she would be “throwing her hat in the ring” to represent Australia in the contest again next year.
Montaigne is now all set to represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, which will be broadcast live on SBS this May.
