As the remaining members of Joy Division stumbled into becoming New Order following the untimely death of Ian Curtis, a “debut” single emerged in Ceremony.
It was actually a Joy Division song, with lyrics by Curtis and performed by the band live a couple of times.
Band member Peter Hook has revisited the now classic song as part of the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund’s recent ‘For the Crew’ fundraising event. All funds raised went towards supporting out-of-work touring crews who have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
Hooky was joined by his son Jack, as well as Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder, and drummer Shane Graham, for a lockdown take on the track. It was all recorded separately and then stitched together to get the ripping result just below.

All going well, Peter Hook & the Light will be touring Australia again in February/March 2022, playing the Joy Division albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer in full, along with a support slot of New Order favourites. Find out more here.
