Following up insanely excellent single Final Form, today Sampa The Great has revealed the next track from her upcoming debut album.
She’s also confirmed said album will be titled The Return, and will be out September 13 via the great people at Ninja Tune.
The Zambia-born, Botswana-raised and Melbourne-residing singer-songwriter says of this delicious new track: “To me, OMG sounds like the songs we heard in our childhood. It’s broadly about flexing your culture! Loving where you’re from and even being shocked at the realisation of not knowing how dope it is to be ‘who you are’.” The bright, choreo-licked clip features cameos from her extremely cute parents, something Sampa has never got to do before. She says: “It was important for me to express accepting and flexing my culture with the two people who know me most!”
Meanwhile, The Return promises to be a raw look into the schism Sampa has experienced as her career has bloomed, which sees her both celebrated as a magnificent new talent but also held in a discrete position of ‘outsider.’ It’s Sampa’s sonic journey to redefine her self-identity and explore home, displacement, freedom and heritage while climbing to the realisation of her final form.
