Deep in the heart of an underground cave, water droplets plink against rock and twisted braids embrace the stone like a living vine: this is Sampa the Great as Eve, in her new track Lane (feat. Denzel Curry).
It’s the first single the Zambian-born, Botswana-raised, Australia-residing poet and rapper has released with lauded label Loma Vista (home to Ghost, Soccer Mommy, Korn, St. Vincent and many other luminaries across genres). It’s our very first taste of Sampa’s new journey since her ARIA- and AMP-winning 2019 record The Return, as well as since she relocated back to Zambia during the pandemic.
Of the single, Sampa says: “Lane is about expressing the full range of who you are without being boxed by anyone else’s definitions of you. Connecting to your younger self means connecting to your truest self, and that truest self is not confined by any labels and any boxes. Lane is about breaking those boxes, and staying true to yourself.”
Watch the viscerally beautiful video below – directed by Rochelle Rhembard and Imraan Christian – and absolutely do NOT forget to grab your tickets to An Afro Future, Sampa’s upcoming live vision which is visiting Sydney and Melbourne at the end of May/early June.
The Return by Sampa the Great is out now via Ninja Tune.
