It may not be glamorous, but sanitation is a big issue around the world. Social action platform Global Citizen have produced a Taylor Swift parody vid in hopes of helping spread the word.
Swift’s smash hit lead single from her just-released Reputation abum, Look What You Made Me Do, becomes Look Where Some People Poo for the take on both the original song and its music video. While we tend to take having a loo for granted, some 4.5 billion people worldwide don’t have access to safe, working toilets. Meanwhile, some 892 million people only have the option of pooping in the open.
Needless to say, such conditions are hotbeds of disease, which include killers such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. If that isn’t alarming enough, an estimated 3.4 million people die from water-related diseases each year. They’re mostly kids – with one in nine child deaths being due to diarrhoea.
To help bring attention to these alarming figures, World Toilet Day was started on November 19 2001, with the United Nations becoming involved in 2013. With the creation and spread of this parody video, Global Citizen hope that people will be encouraged to sign a petition to get the World Bank to act on sanitation as a top priority.
