As one of the most consistently extraordinary and enjoyable niche festivals in the calendar year, Melbourne’s Stonnington Jazz is back for its 13th iteration.

Amongst an extremely thorough programme which runs May 10 – 20, there are several special events which will enthral purists and cross-over fans alike; most notably the final instalment of the popular Mad Jazz series at the Astor Theatre, entitled Mad Jazz 3: Beyond Thunderdome (which sees ARIA-nominated jazz fusion group The Shaolin Afronauts accompany a screening of George Miller’s classic post-apocalyptic film), plus a re-imagining of Bjork’s catalogue by cabaret performer Mama Alto and band.

Also not to be missed is an exclusively commissioned piece by Hiatus Kaiyote’s three-piece rhythm section Swooping Duck, who will perform improvisational compositions with video artist Zero Crossing providing the spontaneous visuals.

Fans of future soul, funk and R’n’B are advised to grab tickets to the late night, dancefloor-based Club Sessions, and emerging artists can attend the festival’s first ever industry summit, comprising a full day of panels and discussion on recording, releasing, publicity, marketing, revenue streams, funding, and international touring.
