The 17th Soundmerch AMP longlist is here – a very respectable 110 titles long, encompassing the absolute crème of Aussie records released this past 12 months – along with the fantastic news of new cash-pool designed to support the eventual shortlist of nine artists.

Three major labels – EMI, Virgin and Island – have each contributed $3,000 to ensure that the shortlisted artists are not out-of-pocket by attending the Winner Announcement event in Melbourne in March; oftentimes, shortlisted artists are at the beginning of their careers and don’t have the kinds of funds that will get them to the event.

Scott Murphy, director and founder of the AMP, explained the idea:

“Over most of the AMP years, if an artist has told me that they can’t attend the main event as they simply can’t afford it, I’ve been able to help them out – however, with the craziness of the past couple of years AMP funding hasn’t been able to do so. To now have additional funds which are dedicated to those artists is such a relief!”

Independent artist Ziggy Ramo, whose debut album Black Thoughts was shortlisted for the $30,000 prize last year (and who is now part of the 36-strong judging panel), added: ”As a lot of the artists shortlisted by The AMP haven’t really started to earn significantly from their work, yet want to attend the announcement event, it can be hard. I experienced this myself! So it’s great to hear that there are now funds available to ensure the artists don’t attend simply for not being able to afford to do so.”

The shortlist will be announced in late January 2022 (get more info right here), but for now, here’s the full longlist for you to sink your teeth into.
