If rapper, singer-songwriter, director, visual artist, activist, record producer, photographer, fashion designer and model M.I.A. isn’t busy enough doing all of that stuff, she’s also curating this year’s Meltdown Festival in London.
Starting tomorrow, the 10-day festival will include a collision of all manner of arty things. On the music side, it’s a refreshingly underground line-up, including Crystal Castles, Young Fathers, Soulwax, Afrikan Boy, MHD, Giggs, Princess Nokia, I Wayne, Dexta Daps, Fakear, Young M.A, Tommy Genesis, Mykki Blanco and JD Samson.
M.I.A. wanted Elastica to reform for the festival, however while she says that she was tempted, band leader Justine Frischmann decided that it would just be too difficult – especially as guitarist Donna Matthews “is now a Christian missionary and can’t stand behind what Elastica stood for in terms of the rock ‘n’ roll thing.”
Obviously it’s a bit hard for us Aussies to get to Meltdown in time now, but at least we can enjoy new M.I.A. track Goals, which she’s just let loose for us…
