Being in a band can be rewarding, but it involves a lot of politics. So, Dave Grohl has kicked the Foos to the curb – but only briefly – for a one-man project that he’s dubbed Play.
The two-part mini-documentary is set to celebrate the “rewards and challenges of dedicating one’s life to playing and mastering a musical instrument”.
As well as featuring narration about the project and behind the scenes stuff, it’s also going to include the main event – that of a 23-minute, one-man-band instrumental recording on which Grohl plays all seven instruments on the track, all live. All played from memory, all reset if he messes something up.
Lucky he’s a darned fine player of most every instrument ever.
Each part has been filmed separately, and then combined via video trickery – so there’s a band room containing seven Dave Grohls!
Play is set to burst forth on the internet on August 10, while the soundtrack of Play hits vinyl in a limited edition on September 29.
