In 1977, two of the world’s great vocal talents in David Bowie and Bing Crosby performed together for a TV special.
The clip, from Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas, remains an amazing thing to watch, and the song which they performed together – a duet of Little Drummer Boy and a new tune at the time, Peace on Earth – still brings chills.
It was seen as a very odd pairing at the time, with Bowie later describing it as “ludicrous” and claiming to have only agreed to do the show simply because his Mum loved Bing. He also apparently hated Little Drummer Boy, and wanted to perform something else. This is why the pair sing different songs at the same time, with Peace on Earth hastily composed and rehearsed. It could have been a mess, but it’s actually inspired.
Sadly, Bing passed away before the show aired and, of course, we lost Bowie many years later. This is just one of the many, many musical legacies that they gave us – we do hope that you enjoy it and we’d like to wish all STACK readers a safe and happy holiday break.
