Secretly SusanMelbourne-based artist Sui Zhen is known for a wide range of musical styles, from acoustic folk to more experimental pop and minimalist dance tracks.

She is a master in many fields, and Secretly Susan combines them into an extraordinary album of harmony and disquiet. There’s elements of skeletal post punk, romantic synth pop, even bossa nova in its structures. Hazy, layered melodies rise and fall like tides over the lyrics, in which a new musical persona is introduced: the Susan of the title. Viewed in this way the album is both a clear portrait and a masked musical image. It’s a compelling exploration of identity, memory and desire, along fraught paths of self-expression and deception.
