The Sony Walkman brought music to the streets in the ’80s in a way that didn’t cause boombox-related shoulder injuries, and has continued – in various forms – to keep music portable.
While that’s no big thing nowadays with the proliferation of mobile phones, it was a huge deal to be able to jam your latest mixtape in your pocket and get into it while on the move back then.
The cassette Walkman saw many generations, that were followed by various CD Walkmen. That format survived for years, staving off not particularly serious competition from the fairly ill-fated MinDisc.
Even now in the age of digital music files, you can still get a Walkman should you want a more specialised portable music player.
So, happy birthday to the Walkman – thanks for all the music (and for making us feel really old all of a sudden!)
