Members of Wilco, R.E.M. and Yo La Tengo are among the performers paying tribute to Big Star on a new live CD/DVD/Blu-ray set that is due out in April.

Thank You Friends: Big Star’s Third Live…and More celebrates the musical legacy of Alex Chilton’s iconic band – in particular their seminal third album from 1978 – and was recorded last April at SXSW in Austin.

Jody Stephens, the soul surviving member of Big Star, is joined for the show by The Posies’ Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer – who were in Chilton’s 90s incarnation of the group, plus the likes of R.E.M’s Mike Mills and the dBs’ Chris Stamey.

The 90 minute concert film also boasts guest appearances from Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone of Wilco, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Robyn Hitchcock, Dan Wilson of Semisonic, Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Jessica Pratt, while the Kronos Quartet lead the string section.

Thank You Friends: Big Star’s Third Live…and More will get its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 16 and will then be released on DVD/CD/Blu-ray in April.
