It’s Tuesday at STACK HQ, and that means one of our esteemed staff members picks a ditty they’re listening to today and explains why they’re so fond of it. Today’s tune: Notorious B.I.G.’s Juicy, chosen by STACK’s Sally Carlier-Hull.

The same week Biggie Smalls married Faith Evans in 1994, the New York rapper had his first chart success with the funky, lyrically brilliant Juicy. It was the record’s producer Sean “Puff Daddy/Puffy/P Diddy/Diddy” Combs who suggested sampling the ’80s funktastic hit, Juicy Fruit by Mtume…  worth noting that this song has now been used in 39 other tracks!

I was a teenager when this tune introduced The Notorious B.I.G. to me. I rapped, sung and danced along with the LP Ready to Die on repeat in my bedroom and giggled at his inventive, unique style of rhyming. Genius.

“Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis
When I was dead broke, man I couldn’t picture this…”

and the line I recite at least once a year:

“Birthdays was the worst days
Now we sip champagne when we thirst-ay”
