Had enough of the Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey carols? Fear not!
Here’s an array of odd Christmas songs to shake it up a little and get you back into the spirit before the big guy visits tonight.
Loose Tapestries, Can’t Wait For Christmas
“Riding through the streets on a Christmas turkey”
Loose Tapestries is comprised of the UK’s biggest wildcard Noel Fielding and Kasabian’s Sergio Pizzorno, and was originally formed to create the soundtrack for Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy – and they’re as bizarre as you’d expect. Last year they released this banger of a Christmas song and as an added bonus, it contains a rapping Idris Elba.
Tim Minchin, White Wine In The Sun
“I get freaked out by churches/ Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords/ But the lyrics are dodgy”
This Aussie comedian/musician is a mastermind of words and knows how to push political boundaries in ways so that dissenters don’t know what hit them. In this sentimental song he dials down his usual upbeat style for a softer one, with clever phrases still making their mark.
The Flaming Lips, Christmas At The Zoo
“There wasn’t any snow on Christmas eve and I knew what I should do/ I thought I’d free the animals all locked up at the zoo”
This brilliant rock band have nailed the holiday ditty… well, sort of. While it’s more focused on getting animals out of the zoo in Central Park than lighting the festive pudding, it’s a great song to slide into the Christmas playlist.
Karmin, Sleigh Ride
“The winter ice so cold, yeah it’s clogging my snuff/ I need the fireplace hot get the logs in the ov’/ Until I get my eggnog a-fog foggin’ me up”
Sometimes all you need for a jolly pick-me-up is a great cover of an existing Christmas song. Karmin take Sleigh Ride completely for their own, with the inclusion of an original rap. (Also worth checking out is Fun.’s funky version.)
The Killers, Don’t Shoot Me Santa
“Don’t shoot me Santa Claus/ I’ve been a clean living boy/ I promise you, did every little thing you ask me to”
Every year since 2006, The Killers have released an original Christmas song to raise money for Project Red. Not only is it a fantastic cause but every single track they’ve released has been a magnificent rock addition to the otherwise cheesy carol tradition.
Rev Run ft. Ma$e, Puff Daddy, Snoop Dogg, Salt-N-Pepa, Onyx & Keith Murray, Santa Baby
Yep, that artist list is no joke.
Pentatonix ft. Tori Kelly, Winter Wonderland/Don’t Worry Be Happy
“Oh, don’t worry/ ’cause we’re walking in a winter wonderland”
Both the acapella and mash-up institutions come out to play for this fun, festive track. It’s true that Pentatonix are no stranger to Christmas songs (with two Christmas albums under their belt), but this lovely combination is something a little different and cheerfully beautiful.
Eels, Christmas Is Going To The Dogs
“Well Christmas is going to the dogs/ We’d rather have chew toys than yule logs”
Original Christmas songs from phenomenal bands will never fail to hit their mark, and this one is no different. Armed with their unique style, Eels turn their perspective to a Christmas pup and it makes you feel fluffy and loved.
Donald Glover and Danny Pudi (Community), Jehovah Witness Rap
“And when the big night comes, it’s time to set the bait/ Cold milk, hot cookies, decking the plate!”
From a Christmas-themed glee episode of the hilarious show Community comes this rap in which Troy (Donald Glover) looks to celebrate Christmas while actually infiltrating Santa’s operation.
