OK, it was just for one week, but the continuing resurgence of vinyl music is very heartening indeed.

In a piece cheekily headlined ‘Vinyl killing the MP3 Industry’, Vinyl Factory reported that in the 48th week of the year in the UK, £2.4 million was spent on vinyl albums, compared to £2.1m on digital downloads.

The data is based on returns supplied by the Entertainment Retailers Association and it is believed to be the first time that vinyl has overtaken downloads in terms of value over a seven day period.

The ERA acknowledges that the big upturn in sales could have been down to Record Store Day Black Friday, but also points out that vinyl is becoming an increasingly popular Christmas gift item.
