Yoyoka Soma’s all-time drummer is John Bonham, so it made sense the eight-year-old would pick a Led Zeppelin song to play for her entry into the 2018 Hit Like A Girl competition.
All cute bowl hair-do, polka-dot socks and joyfully loose style, Soma’s rendition of 1969 hit Good Times Bad Times so impressed the judges of the annual percussion tournament – the aim of which is to spotlight female drummers and encourage musicianship for girls and women, nevermind their age or skill level – that she got through to the final round. Though she didn’t win the trophy, she’s made a hell of a dent in the scene.
Soma first picked up the sticks at two years old, and began performing at age 4. In a statement accompanying her entry, the musician declared: “I want to be an artist who can do anything: playing all instruments, recording music, mixing the sound and designing the CD album jackets. My dream is to be the best drummer in the world.”
She currently plays drums, keyboard and vocals in her family band, Kaneaiyoyoka.
